What are the most important things to remember when saving my document for print?

CMYK - we can produce better colour accuracy with your print job if you convert all of your images from RGB to CMYK before sending them to us.

OUTLINE / EMBED ALL FONTS - Outlining or embedding the fonts that you use in your files means we can print them even if we don’t have those particular fonts installed on our computers and they will look exactly the way you want them to.

INTERNAL BLEED - We require 3mm of internal bleed (or margin) on all files (5mm on all booklets). This means you need to keep all your important information away from this area.

EXTERNAL BLEED - We require 3mm of external bleed on all files (5mm on all booklets). Your job is printed on a larger sheet than it's finished size and then trimmed to size. External bleed is the area extending past your trim area and allows for a small amount of movement that may occur when your work is being cut to size.

TRIM AND CROP MARKS - Always include trim or crop marks (crop marks indicate the final size of your print job).

In what format should I save my file?

WE REQUIRE MOST FILES TO BE PROVIDED AS A PRINT QUALITY PDF.

If your job is single sided then you simply supply a one-page pdf. If your job has two pages i.e. a front and a back then we need a two-page pdf file, the first page of your pdf will be the front page and the second the back page. If you have a job with multiple kinds then you simply supply one two-page pdf for each kind.

Please note that files supplied as: multiple files on a single page, a common back with multiple fronts or vice-versa, separate files, or EPS or JPEG files, will all have to be manually corrected by our operators. This may incur a nominal charge and may slow the turnaround time.

Please supply files one up on a page - for example if you need an entire page of business cards, send us ONE and we’ll sort out the rest.

For best output efficiency, check you have:

What is 'Knockout' and 'Overprint' and when should I anticipate problems?

KNOCKOUT - Often, when two objects or different colors overlap they knockout which means the inks won't print on top of each other.

OVERPRINT - To intentionally print one layer of ink on top of another is to overprint. Overprinting is sometimes used to avoid gaps that could occur between touching objects as a result of knockout.

When it comes to overprint, the main thing to be sure of is that you do not have overprint set on white text or images. If white text or graphics are set to overprint, this information will not print. If you are unsure of how something will look, you can use the "Overprint Preview" option in Adobe Acrobat.

How do I send my files to SG Digital?

You can email files to us if the total email size is under 10mb. If files are larger, please contact us to obtain a username and password for our FTP site.

Wouldn't it be better/cheaper to source my own offset print supplier?

For the inexperienced person, sourcing print estimates can be time consuming and prone to error. You may be asked questions you do not understand or use a supplier that doesnt specialise in the type of work you are wishing to do. Printing is not simply ink on paper, there is an array of processes that make up the final job and this is where our industry experience and knowledge prove invaluable in obtaining the best result for you at the most competitive price possible.

What guarantees do I have?

In the unlikely event you are unhappy with your final printed product, SG Digital Ltd will endeavour to put it right quickly and efficiently at no cost to yourself. If, however, the problem is due to supplied files not matching our specifications, files containing design errors, or proofs having been signed off without a thorough check, we are not liable for any reprinting. We will do whatever we can to assist you in correcting the issue in the most economical way possible.

I have had a cheaper quote - will you be able to match it?

We should always be able to match any like-for-like quote but do bear in mind that in most cases you get what you pay for and great design work is often compromised by budget printing. The chances are if it's cheap, it will look cheap due to substandard equipment, paper and inks being used to reduce costs.
